COB vs Traditional LED Strips: What’s the Difference?
COB vs Traditional LED Strips: What’s the Difference? If you’ve been looking into LED strip lighting, you’ve probably noticed that there are two main types: traditional LED strips and newer COB LED strips. At first glance, they might seem similar — but once you turn them on, the difference is immediately obvious.
Traditional LED strips (often called SMD) are made up of individual light chips placed along the strip. That’s why you see those separate light dots. In many cases, this isn’t a problem — especially if the strip is hidden behind a panel or installed in a ceiling niche. They’re practical, affordable, and still widely used.
COB LED strips work differently. Instead of spaced-out chips, they use hundreds of tiny LEDs packed closely together, creating a smooth, continuous line of light. No dots, no gaps — just a clean glow. This makes a big difference in how the lighting feels in a space.
If the strip is visible, COB almost always looks better. The light is softer, more even, and overall more “designed.” That’s why it’s often used in modern interiors, under cabinets, or anywhere the lighting itself becomes part of the design.
There are also some technical advantages. Because the LEDs are packed more densely, COB strips tend to produce more uniform brightness and can be more energy-efficient. They also handle heat a bit better, which can help with longevity — especially when paired with aluminum channels.
That said, traditional LED strips are still used in many projects — especially when the lighting is hidden or when budget is the main priority.
In the end, if the lighting is meant to be seen and become part of the design, COB is usually the better choice.

What’s the Difference?
COB LED strips
- Smooth, dot-free light
- Clean, modern look
- Even brightness and better visual comfort
Traditional LED strips (SMD)
- Visible light dots
- Less uniform light
- More suitable for hidden or basic lighting
